ESP Pathology Progress Test

The ESP PPT is offered by the European Society of Pathology in close collaboration with the UEMS European Board of Pathology. The ESP PPT is primarily intended for trainees, but (certified) pathologists are free to participate. The ESP PPT is purely formative: a tool for self-assessment. The individual results are kept anonymous.

The ESP PPT consists of 120 questions, partly text based, partly still image based, and partly virtual slide based multiple choice. The chosen level is that of a trainee at the end of a residency programme. The ESP PPT comprises mostly of questions with a purely diagnostic orientation, but molecular pathology test items and mechanism of disease-oriented questions are also included. All questions have four possible answers, one of which is correct. There is no negative mark for an incorrect answer.

The ESP PPT is designed to be completed in 3 hours. The best way to do the test is in one run but it can also be done in parts if the participant does not have time to do it in one effort. Whenever the ESP PPT is accessed, there is a timer activation, so participants need to finish the test in allocated time frame, either in one block or in smaller blocks of time. The timer is set for 5 hours and after its expiration it is no longer possible to access the PPT.

Each question is accessed at a strict order. After submission, the results screen will be shown and no further access to the questions is possible.

Upon completion of the ESP PPT, participants are kindly requested to fill out a brief survey. This is entirely optional but important for the creators of the test allowing them to further improve it.
